Carlsbad High School, currently the sole comprehensive high school in the Carlsbad Unified School District, is as deeply entrenched in its community as its name implies. The school opened in 1958, six years after the City of Carlsbad incorporated in 1952.

The inextricably linked roots of both school and community hark back decades. In 1882, just as what would be known as Carlsbad by the Sea was beginning to form as an agricultural community and resort destination, the first school was established. Carlsbad’s high-quality education has attracted residents dating back to 1887, when the San Diego Daily Bee touted “fast-growing Carlsbad” for featuring among its amenities “a good school with fifty pupils.”   Today, the school, the District and the City have grown and are building toward a sustainable future. With 3,020 students, Carlsbad High is undergoing a massive renovation and a second high school is being built. After incorporating in 1952 with a population of 6,963 and an area of 7.5 miles, the City now boasts some 100,000 residents and 42 square miles. Its public education needs are served primarily by the 13-school, K-12 Carlsbad Unified School District. In addition, three neighboring districts have schools located within City limits.   Carlsbad High is located in what is affectionately called Olde Carlsbad; the northwestern historical heart of the City. Its student population mirrors the demographics of the surrounding community, especially in the mix of white and Hispanic ethnicities.
